The Brewers

Barney's Beer

Barney's Beer is created in Edinburgh's newest brewery, based in the old Dick Vet building next to the Meadows, and within cask-rolling distance from The Peartree, The Blind Poet and The Old Bell.

I started as an apprentice in a brewery before I was old enough to drink beer...that was a tough shift. After a brewing degree, working in various breweries and traveling the world, all in the good cause of rum & whisky promotion, I decided it time to make my own beer.
All Barney's Beer is cask or bottle conditioned. This means you get lots of flavour and it is naturally carbonated. But you do have to carefully pour it into a glass.
Barney's Beer is brewed using traditional techniques; no pasteurisation, no filtration. 100% natural brewing process.

Belhaven Brewery

While 1719 may be the earliest documented evidence of the Belhaven Brewery, there may well have been beer production on the site pre-16th century as the wells and certain cellar vaults are known to date from around the time of the Reformation.
Monks (noted for brewing skills) settled in the area from the 12th century. Luckily they had access to both fine water and top quality local barley.
Deliciously quaffable and light golden in colour, Belhaven IPA offers a delightful fusion of malt and fresh hops. Refreshing floral hints and citrus tones combine to produce the unmistakable clean, crisp flavour of this long awaited IPA... Well worth waiting for! And no need to fear that this wonderful pint is going anywhere... this is a new permanent cask ale from Belhaven!

Caledonian Brewery

Ravaged by fires, once threatened with closure and in constant competition with the big boys, any ordinary enterprise would have succumbed years ago. But if you've tried our beer you'll know: there's nothing ordinary about the Caley. So how come we're still here, the only survivor of Edinburgh's original 40 brewers? Well, that's a long story. The simple answer - as so often in life - can be found in a pint of beer. World-beating Deuchars IPA embodies the flair and know-how of our master craftsmen. While only a brewing heritage stubbornly unchanged for generations can account for the deep complexities of Caledonian 80/-. A dedication to sheer, heady enjoyment is experienced by jumping aboard The Flying Scotsman. And the Caley's pioneering spirit is in never more apparent than in the spectacular Flying Dutchman. After more than 140 years we're proud to call ourselves Edinburgh's brewery, making some of the world's finest beers in one of its greatest cities.

Knops Beer

We brew beers you'll love to drink. Knops Beer Company was born out of a desire to explore the rich heritage and variety that beer has to offer and to brew beers that can appeal to all levels, from the experienced ale drinker to those who have never been lucky enough to discover the range and depth of this vibrant category. Key to the concept is that the beers should have drinkability - the last impression should be even better than the first. Our modern interpretations of traditional beer styles are refreshing and flavourful, satisfying and more-ish but never fatiguing. Our labels are inspired by vintage travel poster designs to reflect a sense of discovery and exploration. Our beers have old or alternative names for styles of beer. Our job is not to criticize what other brewers do, be they large or small, but to celebrate beer in all it's variety and encourage others to do the same.

Orkney Brewery

The tranquil Orkney Islands, with their fertile farming lands and fishing grounds, have been inhabited for over 5000 years. The Orkney brewery is housed in the former schoolhouse in Quoyloo 1 mile from Skara Brae in the heart of Neolithic Orkney. The unrushed culture with its traditional values influences the way we make our beer. We give undivided attention to each stage of the brewing process to ensure that our beer reaches you in perfect condition. This timeless approach has helped us win many national and international awards for both our cask and bottled beers which we hope you will enjoy.
The breweries have had a string of awards, most recently including, for the second year running, winning Best Standard Lager Category at the International Beer Challenge in London for the Atlas Brewerys' Latitude Highland Pilsner making it one of the top 50 beers in the world. Also, at the Highland Business Awards in Inverness, Norman won Best Marketing Award for his re-branding of the products which was presented by Bob McDowell, Vice President of the Microsoft Corporation. Plans for the future include a major re-fit and expansion of the Orkney Brewery site which will increase production and include a visitor centre, café and events venue.

Williams Bros. Brewery

Our story is one of discovery, legend and a passion for home brewing that has lead us to where we are today. A tale of brothers and a brotherhood of brewers that now span the continents. It is one that we hope may inspire others to follow in our wake and become part of the ever increasing and rich Craft Beer community.

The Williams Bros. Brewing Co. started life in the humble ‘Glenbrew’ homebrew shop in Glasgow. This was the family owned business that was both our occupation and passion. In 1988 a lady of Gaelic decent came into the shop with a translation of the recipe for ‘Leanne Fraoch’ that had been handed down through the generations. It was her simple goal to recreate a batch of this historic brew to share with her family.

In return for the knowledge of how to brew the ale she agreed to share the recipe with Bruce. He then experimented with different blends of malts and quantities of heather (adding other botanicals along the way). This ancient process said to date back to 2000 BC became the template for what is now our definitive 'Fraoch' Heather Ale.

Worthington Brewery

William Worthington's White Shield is an original India Pale Ale dating back to the 1820s - it is now known as one of the oldest surviving examples of an India Pale Ale. William Worthington began brewing great beer in Burton-on-Trent in 1744. Worthington's White Shield is bottle conditioned meaning it continues to ferment after bottling, allowing the beer to mature for up to three years. It is the closest thing to cask ale in a bottle and should be savoured to fully appreciate its great taste. Worthington's White Shield is a multi-award winning beer including 7 CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain awards. To date, no other beer has won this many awards, showing how consistently great tasting this beer is.
